Hand of Fatima, Miriam or Mary

This symbol comes from three different faiths. In the Islamic faith it came to be known as the hand of Fatima the daughter of the prophet Muhammad.  This talisman became a part of Jewish tradition initially in North African and Middle Eastern Jewish communities.  The Jewish people retained the Arabic name Hamsa or Chamsa but renamed it the Hand of Miriam referencing the sister of Moses and Aaron. The Chamsa includes five digits and symbolizes God’s protective hand.  Five is a number associated with protection. Christians in the same regions call it the Khamsa or the Hand of Mary.  Many simply refer to it as the Hand of God.

The hand is a sign of protection that also represents blessings, positive energy, happiness, riches and health. With the fingers pointed up, the Hamsa symbolizes a “stop sign” to the adversary, in other words, for protection. With the fingers pointed down, the Hamsa symbolizes God’s goodness and blessings coming down to the wearer or to the room where it is hung.
