Want to Know the Energies You Can Expect from This New Moon?

A Special Message About Manifestation Grid From Reverend Pauline Southard

This year’s Scorpio New Moon arrives quietly enough, early on Sunday morning for those of us on the east coast of the USA. After the uncharacteristic craziness of the Libra New Moon, we long for some peace and quiet. Our wish will only be partially fulfilled. Scorpio is after all, known for its intense emotions and high drama.

At its best Scorpionic energy is charismatic, sexy, intense, incredibly psychic with a love of anything occult and metaphysical. Scorpio FEELS so deeply and often is unable to put into words the things they simply just know. They are often financially savvy and make great investment decisions. They are incredibly loyal but push them too far and they will walk away and never come back.

On a deeper level, Scorpio is the ultimate sign of transformation, death and rebirth. The mythical Phoenix embodies this archetype. The Phoenix will willingly burn in the funeral fires, so it may rise, completely transformed into new life.  This story tells you everything you need to know about Scorpio!

When Scorpio energy is used unskillfully, it is deceptive, cunning, jealous, manipulative and can be dishonest. Scorpios need their privacy and lots of time to be alone, although they can easily become secretive and isolated.

This New Moon chart has its fair share of Scorpionic energy. Mercury, the planet of communication and mental processes, as well as the asteroid Juno join the Sun and Moon in Scorpio.

The Mercury/Uranus opposition will be the major troublemaker here. We can expect lots of disinformation especially this week, particularly involving COVID-19. Further, since the opposition falls into the third house of the chart, we can expect all kinds of issues with communication and means of public transportation. Some troubling new information about the Post Office and its handling of the election will surface. Once again, schools will be faced with incredibly difficult decisions regarding in class or remote learning.

Remember to speak kindly, no matter how tempted! There is, though, always the possibility of some lightning bolts of deep and profound insight. A regular meditation practice will be SO beneficial.

Unfortunately, with the influence of both Mars and the asteroid Hygeia in difficult positions in this New Moon chart, we can expect COVID-19 cases and the resulting deaths to spike.

Further, Venus squares the triumvirate of the planetary heavy hitters: Pluto, Jupiter and finally Saturn. Last December, I wrote about the Saturn/Pluto conjunction: “The exact conjunction of these two powerhouse planets will occur in January, April, and June of 2020 so we are experiencing the last gasp of this potent planetary combination. While Saturn is all about stability, discipline and responsibility, Pluto is about the process of destruction and apparent death so that rebirth and resurrection can occur. Pluto will force us to let go of the people and things in our lives that are no longer serving our highest good. The combination of these two titanic astrological energies is destined to be tumultuous. Expect structures that we all take for granted but don’t serve their purpose anymore to break so there can be fundamental positive change in our lives. This can be a very difficult and at times frightening process, so it is important to be patient and kind to ourselves and others who are experiencing this energy most intensely.” Jupiter plays his part here this month by simply magnifying these energies.

The consequences of these aspects include that nationally we can expect Donald Trump to finally acknowledge the results of the election in his own unique fashion. The financial markets will also show some serious instability.

In our own lives, we can expect to feel very emotional, tired and drained as we face a holiday season that none of us have ever experienced before. It will be important for us to make some really consequential choices about matters that we may have taken for granted in the past. The astrological energies may incite us to simply melt down emotionally as we face the pressure of others expectations causing us to make unwise decisions because it is simply all too much.

It will be really helpful to take some time out.  All of our favorite self-care practices will be very helpful, especially if they involve water. A lovely bath with Epsom salts, essential oils, and Frankincense incense is perfect. We can visualize releasing any unpleasant memories, incidents and emotions into the water, seeing the energy dissolve as we do so. Finally, we can take a warm shower to complete the process.

On a positive note, this New Moon will sextile that same trio of heavy hitters: Pluto, Jupiter and Saturn. This lovely easy flowing positive energetic connection will enable us to begin to move forward on various projects that have been on hold during the Mars and Mercury retrograde periods. Of course, we will certainly need to make adjustments to comply with the reality of the impact of the coronavirus. However, the creativity and determination that will be required to do so will be the gift of this New Moon/Pluto/ Jupiter/Saturn energy.

This month, I once again reached for the “Dreams of Gaia Tarot” by Ravynne Phelan, my favorite deck of the 21st century!  I asked the cards, What do we need to know or do to flow harmoniously with the energies of this New Moon and manifest its most positive potential?

I pulled the Eleven of Water. This card is comparable to the Page of Cups in other decks. It is completely in synch with this New Moon chart as Scorpio is a water sign.  Ms. Phelan titles this card, “Emotion/Intellect.” She writes that the Eleven of Water is a balancing and realignment card that addresses any emotional disharmony that may be affecting our choices and environment. It also represents the need for us to see the whole. I am always a fan of seeing the big picture. This lunation tells me that we will need to balance our emotions with our intellect to move forward harmoniously. Saging ourselves and our environment with a combination of White Sage and Copal followed by a braid of Sweetgrass will create a dramatic positive impact.

This month’s New Moon offers us both some lovely positive aspects as well as some potentially difficult energies we will need to navigate. It is up to us to choose to make great use of the easy energies and to work with the seemingly hidden aspects of the more difficult energies to turn apparent lemons into lemonade!

Traditionally I put two or three special crystals into the Manifestation Grid that help us to work with the astrological energies of the current New Moon. These additional crystals will energize the Grid and make it even more effective since I choose crystals that reflect the energy of the totality of the chart, not just the sign that the New Moon is in. I would encourage you to work with them as well since they are perfect for this lunar cycle. I love the energy of both of these crystals and I hope that you will enjoy them as well.

Gentle Aquamarine is my first choice to help us work with the energies of this intense time. Aquamarine is known as the water of the sea, so its association with the water sign Scorpio is appropriate. Aquamarine will help us to communicate kindly but effectively, counteracting any difficult energies from the Mercury/Uranus aspect. It is a throat chakra stone. It is also known as a crystal of courage. Meditating with Aquamarine will help us to access all of its wonderful qualities.

Powerful Smokey Quartz was my other choice for the Manifestation Grid. It will help us to stay grounded and centered during this lunar cycle. Smokey Quartz enables us to see through illusions so we may clearly see the truth. I feel that this crystal has both water and earth qualities, so it is perfect for accessing the positive energy of the New Moon/Jupiter/Pluto/ Saturn aspect.

I have been so grateful for the overwhelming positive response to the Manifestation Grid that I started seven years ago. I love seeing people put their requests into the grid and hearing about all the positive results so many of you have had. Now it is possible to either use the Manifestation Grid in person when you come in to Karma or you may continue to put your requests into the Grid at a distance as you have been doing during the time that the store was closed.

Archangel Metatron, my primary guide had channeled this method to help you to put your requests in remotely:

#1- Please write your intentions on a piece of paper with the date, feeling love in your heart as you do OR for ANY positive purpose whatsoever!

#2- Visualize yourself accomplishing your desire. (I would certainly appreciate if you could also request the disappearance of the Corona Virus and the quick healing of ALL of those affected and the healing of all inequality and hate ), feeling love in your heart as you do OR for ANY positive purpose whatsoever!

#3- Using the picture on the Karma website, intend to put your request into the grid just as you would if you were in the store. Archangel Metatron has told me that he will help you to make that happen. You do NOT need to be good at visualizing! Every morning I will be charging the Grid with long distance Reiki and other powerful energies to help make your wishes come true.

#4- When you feel that the process is complete you may either dispose of the paper or put it on your altar, refrigerator or paste it into your journal. It is helpful but not necessary to spend a few minutes every day for the next thirty days repeating Step 3. Your intentions will be active in the Grid for the next 30 days. !

I am so happy that A Time for Karma is now open. Our wonderful owner, Vonda and our fabulous staff have done a terrific job to make sure your shopping experience is both magical AND safe!

Karma is where my heart is. Although all of the readers are still reading from home at this time, it is possible to connect with all of us by visiting A Time for Karma’s reader page, https://atimeforkarma.com/spiritual-counselors/ to arrange a reading.

I have been deeply touched by the positive feedback at I have gotten from my phone clients. Although I started my career as a reader working as a phone psychic many years ago, I have read almost exclusively at Karma in person for the last 20 years. I have found that there has been an incredible amount of high vibrational information that is coming through now during my phone readings. Reading for all of you has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.  You can connect with me either by e-mail: karmickat@aol.com or by cell: 516-445-4242.

Wishing you a Scorpio New Moon filled with passion and profound insights. May you rise to new life just like the Phoenix during this lunar cycle!

Last Month's New Moon Message

The October 16, 2020 Libra New Moon arrives midafternoon on Friday for those of us on the east coast of the USA.  It’s a great moment to take a deep breath before we plunge into the activities of the weekend. We really need to because like the majority of the 2020 New Moon charts, this New Moon is full of high drama and inherent contradictions.

The chart seems innocent enough, at first glance. A Libra New Moon should ideally give us a dinner at a French restaurant followed by attending an opening at an art gallery capped off by an intellectual conversation at a charming café.  Libra is a lovely sign. Libra is graceful and elegant. Libra loves the arts. Libra energy is diplomatic, sophisticated and refined. For Libra, fairness and justice are the most important values. They are such pleasant companions and wonderful to spend time with!

When you dive deeper into the Libra soul, past all that charm, you will find that the paramount concern in their lives is their relationships. ALL of their relationships! Libra is an air sign, connected to the element of air and the mental realm. Libras love to spend hours analyzing the finer points of their connections with others. Librans incarnate here on earth to learn lessons about relationships- both easy and difficult.

This Libra New Moon chart reminds me of those Russian nesting dolls where there is a smaller doll inside the doll that you first see and a smaller doll inside that doll etc., etc. because of the complexity of the astrological factors involved. Our oh so charming Libra New Moon sits in the 8th house of the chart when it is calculated for the east coast of the USA. This is the natural home of Scorpio, a sign which is known for its desire for privacy, solitude and seeing the unvarnished truth. Not a shred of diplomacy there. So, our Libra New Moon is situated in an uncomfortable place causing tension right from the start.

Further, the New Moon opposes Mars, (which sounds like what it is) the planet of action and war. Mars is still retrograde and will not go direct until November 13, 2020. When Mars is retrograde, we often feel frustrated and boxed in. The resulting stuck energy can erupt or boil over causing a metaphorical mess! Our romantic relationships will be the most affected. Ultimately, it will be impossible to sweep the issues that most plague our love relationships under the rug.

To put the cherry on top of the Mars component of this New Moon chart, on Oct 13, 2020 just a few days before the New Moon, Mars reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit around the Sun, greatly increasing the intensity of this energy. The economy and our personal budgets may suffer as well, since this New Moon/ Mars opposition spans the money houses of the chart.

As we continue to unpack our Russian nesting dolls, we next find that this New Moon is in the process of squaring(a harsh and difficult aspect), the ongoing Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto conjunction that has, in large part made 2020 so difficult. This piece of the chart describes the idea of conflict between the forces of justice, liberty beauty and harmony vs. authoritarianism, raw power, force and the hidden power of big corporate money.

Last December, I wrote about the Saturn/Pluto conjunction: The exact conjunction of these two powerhouse planets will occur in January, April, and June of 2020 so we are experiencing the last gasp of this potent planetary combination. This can be a very difficult and at times frightening process, so it is important to be patient and kind to ourselves and others who are experiencing this energy most intensely.

The final factor directly affecting the Libra New Moon is the extreme magnification of ALL of these energies caused by the Moon reaching its closest point in its orbit around the Earth, otherwise known as a Super New Moon. Hang on- it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

There are 2 other important factors that while not directly affecting the New Moon will certainly play a role in the environment that the New Moon finds itself in. The first is the final Mercury retrograde cycle of the year which begins on October 14, 2020 and ends on Nov. 3, 2020.

Mercury retrograde signifies that from our point of view, here on Earth, Mercury appears to be moving backward through the sky when plotted against the background of the stars of the Zodiac. Of course this is an illusion, caused by the way the Earth’s orbit interacts with the orbit of Mercury as both planets revolve around the Sun. This is the infamous Mercury Retrograde that you may have heard of.

Mercury retrograde generally happens three times a year for approximately three weeks at a time. Traditionally, astrology teaches us that during Mercury retrograde, we should be reflecting, reviewing and revisiting rather than starting new projects. Problems with laptops and all other electronic devices are common, travel snafus abound and miscommunication is common. So, back up your computer, double check your travel plans and make sure you really heard that nasty crack correctly!!

Finally, our last tiny but oh so important Russian nesting doll is the asteroid Hygeia which plays a prominent role in this New Moon chart. I have seen that Hygeia has had an important role throughout the ongoing Co-Vid 19 pandemic. Hygeia is the fourth largest of the asteroids, found in the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter. Hygeia was named after the Greek goddess of health, daughter of Asclepius the god of medicine. She is the astrological embodiment of health, cleanliness, and sanitation.

At the New Moon, Hygeia will form an almost exact square to Uranus, the planet of disruption, revolution and unforeseen surprises.  I’m concerned that there will be an even more extreme manifestation of the Corona Virus and some unexpected upheavals that none of us can anticipate. On a practical level this means that despite our Corona virus fatigue, it is vital to continue following the protocols that the top epidemiologists such as Dr. Fauci have been advocating. Mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing etc. We all know the drill by now!

Since this New Moon cycle encompasses Election Day 2020, I took a quick look at the chart for that day as well. The Election Day chart has its share of difficult energy as well and of course echoes the themes of the Libra New Moon. Mars is still retrograde but not directly affecting any of the key planets, so its affect will be somewhat muted. The Sun will oppose Uranus giving us the energy of instability. There will be a Full Moon on Halloween, so I expect a real super-duper final October election surprise as all is revealed at the time of the Full Moon!

Although, predicting the winner of the election is definitely a losing proposition, I will simply note that Joe Biden’s predictive astrological charts are a lot more positive than Donald Trumps’.

However, the most important factor in this election is Mercury stationing to go direct- exactly on Election Day! This is one of the most intense and consequential parts of any Mercury retrograde cycle. We can expect all kinds of Mercury retrograde havoc. Voting machines failing, incorrect counting of ballots, deliberate attempts to manipulate vote counts and lost ballots. Add to that the major increase in absentee ballots and the various arbitrary systems the various states have of counting ballots and you don’t need to be an astrologer to see that this will be a mess. Although I would not be surprised if it takes several days to determine a winner, when you add the Uranian element of complete unpredictability, all bets are off.

Once again, common sense will be our best friend. Here in the State of New York, there are still options for early in person voting. Please check the NY state official website for accurate information. We need to be willing to be patient as well during this extraordinary election cycle.

This contradictory, inexplicable New Moon chart is an accurate description of what we are living through. The Libra New Moon just wants to live somewhat above the fray in peace and harmony having inspiring conversations with others and cherishing the love of their lives. Instead This Libra New Moon feels pulled in three different directions, confronted by rude and arrogant people, manipulated and even victimized by those that they love the most. True Libran hell!

So, what to do? I looked for answers in several different places starting with the New Moon chart itself. Hidden within the muck, is some moderating positive energy. Venus the goddess of love, situated in Virgo, the epitome of humility and a  practical  hands on approach makes a lovely harmonious trine to Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn- the big three key players, softening their energy. She encourages us to tackle our individual situations with kindness and to take whatever small but useful concrete actions that are possible that ultimately will make a difference. She reminds us that a 1000 mile journey starts with a single step.

The Sabian oracle for the degree of this New Moon provided another clue: “A third wing on the left side of a butterfly.” This symbol speaks to the unlimited potential that we all possess that unfortunately we do not always use. When we access our own unique potential, there is no limit to what we can achieve, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Although, the third wing can be seen as an abnormality, that others might initially mock, using the gift that it offers is the path to both recognizing and using our distinct and original gifts. I feel that during these extraordinary times, we are being encouraged to look within and discover the gifts that we possess that we are just to busy to explore in the ordinary day to day life. Do you want to paint, draw, sing, write or is there another unique form of expression that resonates for you? The lovely Libra Moon will always support these journeys of exploration.

This month, I decided to ask my old and much loved friend, “The Shapeshifter Deck” created by a wonderful trio: D.J. Conway, Sirona Knight (authors) and Lisa Hunt (artist) for further guidance. This spectacular tarot deck uses the magic of the Celtic shapeshifting tradition to enable us to become acquainted with the ancient traditions of shamanism so we may broaden our spiritual awareness and better experience the connections between people, animals and nature. In shapeshifting, one takes on the specific characteristics, traits and talents of a desired animal to accomplish a specific purpose, and for a limited amount of time. Although this sounds very lofty, I have been using this deck for years for many practical matters. The true power of this deck is that it works on many different levels.

This is my first experience using the Shapeshifter deck for the New Moon column. It did not disappoint. I first started using this beautiful and profound deck approximately 20 years ago. The exquisite illustrations provide a vast amount of meaning, right down to the smallest detail. The two authors are very well known in the metaphysical field. They have produced a wonderful companion book that greatly enhances the use of the deck.

I asked the cards, “What do we need to know or do to flow harmoniously with the energies of this New Moon and manifest its most positive potential?” I received the, “The Seer”. This card represents the major arcana card, “The Hermit.”  Traditionally, The Hermit is a card about needing solitude in order to discern your own path and then take the necessary steps to follow it. Sirona Knight tells us, “Wisdom from divine sources is coming to you. A time of needing to be alone, The Seer is a card that helps you learn how to belong to yourself. The Seer represents the need to structure your life in ways that are more harmonious and aligned with your true nature.

Initially, I found this to be all very puzzling.  After all, Libra is at heart all about relationships and The Seer advises us to spend time in solitude and go within.  After meditating with the New Moon chart, I had some wonderful insights. I realized that at the time of this New Moon, we could greatly benefit from taking some time to be by ourselves so we can reflect on all of our relationships and what love really means for us.

Dazzling Venus who is shining so brightly in the eastern sky, just before sunrise offers further guidance. In this New Moon chart, she resides in the 7th house. This is the astrological house of all partnerships and is of course the marriage house. She is about to oppose Neptune, causing us to be vulnerable to illusion and deception about our relationships and our own roles in them. Subsequently, she will harmoniously trine the big three players this year- Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto providing an avenue for healing.

The key here is to be willing to be completely honest with ourselves and reexamine how we see the people we love most in the world. Are we willing to love ourselves (that is a relationship too!) and others exactly as we and they are? This doesn’t mean making excuses, being a victim or tolerating behavior that is unacceptable. It does mean willing to see ourselves as God sees all of us and acting as best we can with that definition of love. It means dropping the romantic fantasies about love and marriage that this culture teaches us right from the cradle! The Velveteen Rabbit by Margary Williams expresses these ideas of love and authenticity better than I ever could. Ostensibly a children’s story, it should be required reading for everyone at this time!

Calming Chrysocolla is perfect this month on so many levels. Crystal Vaults wonderful online encyclopedia of crystals tells us, “Chrysocolla encourages inspiration by combining creative ideas with new practical applications, helping us to harmoniously blend the conflicting predominant energies of air and earth in this New Moon chart. Within the home, Chrysocolla draws off the negative energies of rocky relationships and situations that are constantly changing. It provides stability, acceptance and great inner strength. One strange property of Chrysocolla known since antiquity, is its ability to help people to stay at home. It is the stone of monks, hermits and prisoners, diminishing the anxiety and depression that often accompanies seclusion.” Chrysocolla certainly covers all the bases this month!

Lovely Larimar was my other choice for the Manifestation Grid as it cools tempers and calms fears, relieves stress and nurtures the physical and emotional bodies. It is powerful in meditation. It is particularly helpful in releasing emotional bonds, patterns or principles that no longer serve the highest good. A stone of clear communication, it provides the strength and courage needed to speak openly from the heart.

I have been so grateful for the overwhelming positive response to the Manifestation Grid that I started seven years ago. Full Moon

New Moon Manifestation Ritual

During the new moon phase the moon goes from smaller to bigger so it is a great time to manifest anything you would like to increase.

Hand write a list of what you wish to manifest on a piece of paper. Be very specific!

Go outside and read your wishes aloud to the moon. Afterward thank the moon and the universe for listening.

Fold your paper and keep it in a safe and prominent place, such as your altar. Read your list daily, outside if possible, thanking the moon and the universe every time.

Do this every day until the full moon.
When the moon is full, read your list one final time, then burn it in the flame of a candle, sending it up to the universe.

Trust and know that your wishes will be manifested at the perfect time and in the perfect way for you.

Information papers for this ritual as well as for many items in our store are available free of charge every day at Karma!
